OK - now I have the perfect excuse to bid on that white Shetland lace weight yarn on eBay!! I found this link http://cache.lionbrand.com/Newsletters/45307.html that explains how to dye yarn with vegetables - just like the good old days! I'm sure there are many more sites on the internet with examples but this looks like a good place to start.
I remember you mentioned using Kool-Aid to dye yarn too? Much more vibrant colors, certainly, but something about dying with onion skins and knowing that is how they did it in Pilgrim times (Thanksgiving is only 3 months away, isn't it) is something I want to try. What do you think? Have you ever used vegetables to dye yarn? How color fast is it? How about with Kool-Aid?

I haven't tested the Kool-Aid dyeing yet, but I know it does make very vibrant colors. Kristin does some natural dyeing with lettuce and walnuts, so she's pretty experienced with it.
How was your weekend?
I actually had a really nice 3-day weekend. My measurement of "nice" is based on how much crying was involved, did I get any knitting in and did I get to sleep in or grab a nap? Crying (kids not me)was bearable, I was able to sleep in one morning (hubby took the kids OUT of the house which is the only way it is ever really quiet) and I was able to knit enough to start a birthday gift for a 2-year old-little girl. It's a felted toddler backpack. I'm experimenting b/c the pattern was originally just a knit piece but I thought felting it would make it much more interesting... so I'm having to play w/ measurements and stuff.
How is the Minimalist Cardigan coming along? You are a knitting prodigy if you can figure out how to do the sweater seamless in order to save yarn. Wow. I actually found a website that sells the SB Kertzer yarn that I need one more skein of, so that's a good back up for me. Still going to try and see how far I can get with what I have.
How was your weekend?? How's the job hunt going? I think I have thoroughly annoyed the heck out of LW on the Green Committe b/c I complained that our vendor couldn't tell us if the GG tumblers were made w/ bis-phenol-A or not. They don't seem to think it's a problem that the vendor can't get this information b/c the manufacturer in China isn't responsive. Hmmmmm, that doesn't make me feel good about buying their products much less drinking out of them! Anyways, I'm going to drop the whole BPA thing but I'm not going to use my glass for anything more than pencils - oh well.
Oooh and dyeing with walnuts and lettuce? Wow - how the heck does that work??
Tonight is the first meeting of my monthly knitting group - I'm looking forward to meeting some other knitters, especially some seasoned ones that can help me with some of my knitting stumbling blocks. Should be fun!
I'm glad you had a good weekend, and that you're driving everyone at my former employer nuts. :) How'd your knitting group go?
My weekend was nice--we went to Iowa, and Matt's parents went far above and beyond the call of duty since my birthday is coming up. Of course I now have one of those end-o-summer colds, but I'm trying to sleep it off as much as possible. I got about 5 inches or so knit on the cardigan (and I'll tell you my secret: most patterns knit in separate pieces don't include allowances for selvage stitches which you would have to add to make the seaming work, so if you just cast on the exact number of stitches called for and knit in one piece until you're supposed to start decreasing for the sleeves, then knit each piece as though you'd knit them separately all along...if that makes sense).
The job hunting is going about as well as it could be, I guess...but I did break down and send out my resume to every reputable temp service in the area.
I don't know how Kristin does her dyeing, but I assume it involves boiling water and some vinegar to make it colorfast...or something.
